Outward Bound grows mana

To say that Outward Bound put George Te’o out of his comfort zone would be an understatement.

Initially unsure about attending, George, a Year 12 student from Tawa College, is enthusiastic about his 21 days at Anakiwa, and about the influence the course has had on him.

George was sponsored by Moore Markhams for the Mind, Body, Soul programme held immediately prior to the March 2020 COVID-19 lockdown, joining 13 other students from around the Wellington region.

He says he was “pushed to go beyond” his limits only to discover he had more to give. Those challenges included kayaking, hiking, sailing, rock climbing, a half marathon run and more. A three- night solo camp was particularly hard for him, not realising the impact it could make on his life and who he was as a person and who he wants to be in 10 years’ time.

“I learnt a lot about myself. I’m glad I took the opportunity to go,” George says. “I’ve identified more of my strengths and weaknesses. I’ve become more independent. And I’ve learnt to appreciate the things that we have that people on the other side of the world don’t have.”

That personal growth is already making itself known, with George saying he’s really trying hard with his studies, a fact not lost on Tawa School principal Murray Lucas and his teachers who have noted “good changes”.

He’s also a centre in the school’s First XV rugby team and has been recently commended for his contribution to the team’s positive attitude by a match referee.

At the course George impressed with his willingness to support others, an example being carrying a team mate’s pack when they struggled. Making some great friends was another big plus for George.

Moore Markhams Wellington director, Abbey Warner was at the celebration ceremony to acknowledge George and his course mates’ achievements. She observed that George perhaps didn’t appreciate the positive influence he had on those around him, his mana.

“It was great to be able to go and talk to George and know that something the Moore Markhams network is doing has made a real difference in his life.”
